And let's see if we can keep it that way, shall we? :shocked!:

So the wedding season will be back in full force shortly, and I've started going over some of my dinner playlists, updating with new stuff and getting rid of tracks I never play.

Here's my question:

If you could incorporate one song into your dinner playlist and play it wedding after wedding and never get tired of it, what song would that be? In other words, what's your favorite dinner song to play?

Mine is "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds.

I could play that song at every wedding (I come close to doing that actually, unless the want classical or something) and not get tired of it. A few years ago a catering staff member at one wedding commented about out of all the DJs she's seen no one had ever played that song as she sniffled and wiped away a tear. I didn't ask her to elaborate but I assume the song had some special meaning to her.

Anyway, you guys have any favorites? Any gems we can add to our arsenal?

I'd say that Bruno Mars "Just The Way You Are" is another one of my dinner favorites--but it's too new for me to decide if I'll get sick of it yet...

I guess it depends on what the style of the wedding is, I don't really have a cookie cutter playlist for anything.

I've got about 7 different playlists for dinner, depending on the type of music asked for. If they say "we want rat pack" and don't give you any specific songs, I have a playlist ready to go. I'd prefer they give me a better idea on artists/songs whatever, but lots of times they're cool with my pop list, which has Stevie Wonder to Bruno Mars. That's the list I'm working on right now. Dancing is different--those are built dynamically. You can't can a dancing list. But I'm not going to build a specific dinner playlist for each wedding if I don't have to. For example, if they want a mix of classical and string quartet (2 different lists) I can mix them up. Ultimately I like to have a stand-by list go off of. Personally I like the pop one because 1. it's the most popular and 2. it pleases the most amount of people.

And you didn't answer my question.

Somewhere On Hoth
IZ-Somewhere over the Rainbow
Bryan Adams- Have You Ever really loved a woman
Rod Stewart/Cher - Bewitched, Bothered, & Bewildered

These 3 songs make just about every dinner hour I do.

Atomic Cocktail - Slim Gaillard...

Pretty much the entire "Get Shorty" soundtrack...

South Of Market - Joyce Cooling

Julio's Party - Spyro Gyra
South Beach - Spyro Gyra
Ocean Parkway - Spyro Gyra

I also have about ten chamber music versions of Disney Classics that were recorded as dinner music for Club 33 at Disneyland, they're recognizeable in a very subtle way.

And for the Holidays...
Walkin' 'round In Women's Underwear - Bob Rivers Comedy Corporation

Steve--Hey man, stuff 'round here disappears in body bags in the middle of the night. And while I'm glad that last thread got deleted, let's call this a little social experiment to see if we can all get along if we talk about something neutral--music.

>:D<

Thanks for the suggestions, StevieRay. I had two of the three of those in the list already. To be 100% honest I don't think I know that Rod Stewart/Cher song. Doesn't mean it's bad, though.

I don't like the criteria of "pick one." It's like asking me to choose a favorite child. :D

I tend to play much more upbeat music during cocktails and dinner, but not always, and since I think the idea is to find ideas that others aren't playing, I'm going to list a few.

Van Morrison - Moondance
Ottmar Liebert - Barcelona Nights
Lauren Wood - Fallen
Nat King Cole - L.O.V.E.
Sonny & Cher - I Got You Babe
Michael Buble - Sway
Jack Johnson - Better Together
Amos Lee - Sweet Pea
Bob Marley - Jammin
Buddy Holly - True Love Ways
Jack Johnson - Better Together

One of my music categories is called "Fun Stuff." It's my most popular category. Funny, a lot of people start out saying, "You know, just some soft background, maybe light jazz or classical..."

Because that's all they've ever seen. I talk to them about the concept of their music as a soundtrack, rather than "background," and most of them get it and get more excited.

I have a wedding coming up where we'll be playing Pantera during dinner. (Not much, but enough to make for a pretty fun moment, I think.)

Dinner music is the one thing that can be cookie cutterish without being a problem. For me, getting a general idea of the music that they want lets me pick a playlist for dinner. As long as the music style is right, the actual songs don't matter as much. Rarely would I deviate from a pre-defined dinner playlist.

Itunes genius can really be your friend here too.

Oh, to answer the original question, no, there really isn't any song that I could listen to week after week and not get sick of it.

Randy-

Great list. Seriously. I had most of those already, but the Amos Lee is one I didn't--and a that's a home run for sure. :p

And I think I'll throw that Buddy Holly one in on a different list--but still good.

Anyone have positive/neg. vibes on "Marry Me" by Bruno Mars?

Listening to the lyrics "Let's do something dumb"... just makes me a little cautious for some silly reason.

Or is it "Ok to play?" :)

Joe, I heard that the first time on Sunday in the car. First thing I thought of was a dinner music song. I want to go back and listen to it again to see if it might be something to suggest to my couples for ceremony.

Haven't done that yet.

Brian-

My only problem with iTunes genius is that there are some great background dinner songs but lyrically you have to be careful. I've cut more than one song because of lyrics. You don't want a breakup song during dinner. ;) I don't use iTunes and I'm not that familiar with genius, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't filter by lyrics. If I'm wrong I apologize in advance.

Here's some more on my list that I really like:

Just Like Heaven--The Cure
Collide (acoustic version)--Howie Day
Crash Into Me--Dave Matthews Band
Lovesong--The Cure (Big Cure Fan!!)
Some Kind Of Wonderful--Grand Funk Railroad
Alright--Darius Rucker
I Will Follow You Into The Dark--Death Cab For Cutie

Lyrics to Marry You:

It's a beautiful night,
We're looking for something dumb to do.
Hey baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

Is it the look in your eyes,

Or is it this dancing juice?
Who cares baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

Well I know this little chapel on the boulevard we can go,

No one will know,
Come on girl.
Who cares if we're trashed got a pocket full of cash we can blow,
Shots of patron,
And it's on girl.

Don't say no, no, no, no-no;

Just say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah;
And we'll go, go, go, go-go.
If you're ready, like I'm ready.

Cause it's a beautiful night,

We're looking for something dumb to do.
Hey baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

Is it the look in your eyes,

Or is it this dancing juice?
Who cares baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

I'll go get a ring let the choir bells sing like oooh,

So whatcha wanna do?
Let's just run girl.

If we wake up and you wanna break up that's cool.

No, I won't blame you;
It was fun girl.

Don't say no, no, no, no-no;

Just say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah;
And we'll go, go, go, go-go.
If you're ready, like I'm ready.

Cause it's a beautiful night,

We're looking for something dumb to do.
Hey baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

Is it the look in your eyes,

Or is it this dancing juice?
Who cares baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

Just say I do,

Tell me right now baby,
Tell me right now baby.

Cause it's a beautiful night,

We're looking for something dumb to do.
Hey baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

Is it the look in your eyes,

Or is it this dancing juice?
Who cares baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

I'm on the fence on this one for dinner, definitely wouldn't use it for a ceremony.

I just went and listened to it and I didn't hear those words. Do something dumb. I looked up the lyrics and didn't see it there either. Unless I am just missing it somewhere.

"Marry Me"

Forever can never be long enough for me
Feel like I've had long enough with you
Forget the world now we won't let them see
But there's one thing left to do

Now that the weight has lifted
Love has surely shifted my way
Marry Me
Today and every day
Marry Me
If I ever get the nerve to say "Hello" in this cafe
Say you will
Mm-hmm
Say you will
Mm-hmm

Together can never be close enough for me
Feel like I am close enough to you
You wear white and I'll wear out the words I love you
And you're beautiful
Now that the wait is over
And love and has finally shown her my way
Marry me
Today and every day
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say "Hello" in this cafe
Say you will
Mm-hmm
Say you will
Mm-hmm

Promise me
You'll always be
Happy by my side
I promise to
Sing to you
When all the music dies

And marry me
Today and everyday
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say "Hello" in this cafe
Say you will
Mm-hmm
Say you will
Marry me
Mm-hmm
