Jason,

Not saying you specifically don't get it. Atom's are not dogs. They just are when coupled with Win7. I too can run my system from a phone, but frankly there is no reason. The screen real estate is just not there.

Look, people hate the iphone. Yet it is the largest selling smart phone on the planet. It singularly has kept AT&T in business. IF Verizon get's the iphone as well, AT&T is toast & the iphone will rule the smart phone market.

Gino,

It is far from iFail. If they do nothing more they have done more than any other netbook has done in a single day. They sold 300K of them SAT. I love mine. Really love it. I can't remember the last piece of technology that I felt that way about it.

As for Flash, it's dead. Everybody knows it. It is a CPU pig with little room given the new technologies that are replacing it. HTML 5 & other protocols are the future. Flash will be just as dead as video in little tiny screens are.

I don't expect netbooks to compete with my desktop or Laptop CAD tools, BUT I just got back from Best buy. I took my iPad & ran side by side comparisons of them doing numerous things. Here are just a few.

1.) Boot up. My ipad was up & surfing the web before ANY netbook with windows was even finished booting. Can you say nearly 3 min?

2.) APP store functionality. I googled several app ideas. Things I wanted to do. I found many in the app store. All in one place. I had to hit a dozen separate sites to find the same number of windows apps. Not a big deal but the APP store will be the driver on this. The iphone didn't really take off until the app store landed. I am an iphone developer. The rules while a bit draconian really help to make sure that the apps work as they say they will.

3.) Office docs. Word, Excel & PPT. I had opened all 3 office apps in the ipad before the netbooks had even loaded Word.

4.) weight/form factor. The netbooks were thicker & had hinges that will break. The ipad is thin, monolithic & was very functional.

5.) Heat. The netbooks all got significantly hotter than the ipad.

6.) Landscape/portrait mode. Netbooks can't do it without making the keyboard useless.

The netbooks won for multi tasking apps & for total storage space. They also had a better keyboard, or maybe I haven't adapted to the ipad keyboard yet.

The iPad will change the way that most people think & focus on mobile computing for the tasks I have outlined. I see no reason at all for a netbook.

With the iPad, you can pair a bluetooth keyboard to it. While that's another device to carry, it's far superior to most of the cramped keyboards you find on NetBooks.

Great but again, I use virtual DJ and if I cant do that with the IPAD then forget it...
No, you can't run Virtual DJ specifically on the iPad, but there will be DJ related apps available that may turn out to be even BETTER than Virtual DJ.

If you want to keep doing things exactly the way you are doing them, then the iPad isn't for you. However, if you are willing to re-think things and see if the iPad could be a better solution, it just might be. Of course, it might not as well. But to say it sucks because it's different is missing the point.

I never said it sucks.. what I am trying to figure out as are others is WHAT we can do with this that we cant already do with out laptop or netbook or PDA phone.... Why do I need to spend over $500 on this? I will need another laptop soon ... will I look at the IPAD.. NOPE.. I need something to work with what I already have... not start using OTHER APPS...

Now on the other hand, if I didnt have a PDA phone and only needed to SURF and take notes then I might look at this.. but I can do most things on other devices I already have...

Drax,

You mentioned the at&t network sucks on your iphone, I am just wondering if it is area specific that it sucks. I don't have an iphone but do have at&t as my cell provider with no issues and rarely a dropout. I don't use internet on my phone either.

The more I think about it the more I want an ipad. Think I will wait awhile and see if more apps and features come available in future versions. It would be nice to be able to do my homework anywhere without the lappy.

You might be in a good area with your AT&T coverage, but overall Verizon is considered to have the best network coverage...

The FCC is already concerned over AT&T and the future impact of iPads on the AT&T network..

around here (southern NJ and philly), ATT has the worst coverage.. I have relatives that travel between here and VA and the coverage is really bad most of the way. there are SOME spots that are OK but mostly I cant hear them and they cant hear me. they have switched to verizon. I have sprint and its good too...

BTW - HOWARD STERN said it himself.. he had ATT and so did his Side Kick Robin. Neither of them could make calls from NY ... they both switched to verizon...

If the iPhone wasn't only on AT&T, I'd have one instead of the iPod touch. I've heard to many horror stories about AT&T service. I simply won't use their service. When the iPhone moves to another carrier, then I'll use it.

IMO, The iPad will be an excellent content consumption device. If the content I consume is on another machine, then that's OK by me as long as I don't have that 30 pound system sitting in my lap.

The powerhouse is elsewhere, and I'm simply taking control of that powerhouse, with a 1.5 pound tablet.

If you need content creation, then by all means, use your laptop/desktop system, but for strictly consumption of previously created content, I think the iPad will exceed your expectations.

Don't want one? That's completely your decision. I'm not going to spend your money. I will get my own one day soon though. I'll be waiting for the 3G version for certain, but hopefully be using someone other than AT&T for it's service.

Dave,

AT&T blows in almost every market. Their 3G Edge network is SLOWER than molasses in Feb in Canada.

I love mine, & I really don't like Macs or APPLE.

Unlimited,

I have a PDA phone, websurfing on them is really a joke, let's be honest. Same for email. 1 finger typing????

As soon as my smaprtphone contract is up, I am getting a very small, makes calls only phone on Verizon where I currently am with my Smart phone.

I didn't buy a netbook, because they take too long to boot up, are clunky & have no battery life compared to a 10+ hour real life iPad. yes mine took over 10 hours to get to 15% & that was movies, web, email apps everything. Not too shabby.

I agree that AT&T is a huge weak point with the iPhone and iPad.

Someday their devices will be able to connect to your carrier of choice. Hopefully it's within our lifetime.

BTW - I have something called SWYPE on my phone.. It makes typing faster.. not one finger typing... and EMAIL is find on my TP2 phone.. in fact I use my sprint TP2 more then my netbook. I dont think I would carry around the iPAD.. its too big to have with you at all times.. meanwhile my phone is with me at all times and can do almost everything the ipad can including microsoft office and almost any application for Windows mobile (not limited to store apps).. AND I have a cable that I can use to connect it to a video system such as a projector...

OK, so it's the 3G network that sucks. I only use my phone for calls and text. No need to use i-net on phone.

The iPad isn't intended to REPLACE a phone that's with you all the time. But in cases where you need to do a presentation and connect it to a projector, I'd certainly take an iPad versus using a phone for that.

Ha ha. Now that's interesting. Although, why did the pointer not work where his finger pointed? It acted like a mouse instead of a touch screen interface. Wow, that would be annoying quick.

I guess it senses relative motions on the touchscreen to move the mouse?

The bigger issue is that Windows 95 sat on top of DOS, so you should be able to call up a command prompt. There's your open OS. And run Macromedia Flash 3.0 in Internet Explorer 4, and you can see all those fancy Flash-enabled websites!!!

So there you go! No more excuses to not get an iPad! :D LOL...

If I could actually justify the cost of an iPAD I might have one... BUT with my PDA phone and netbook (which I teather together) I can do everything and MORE then the iPAD can. Sure there are some cool apps but they are currently iphone apps and dont look good blown up.. Would I love the bigger screen? YEP. but not at the price... Maybe some other company will come up with a batter PAD type device... just like the iPhone where OS4.0 finally makes the iPhone do with it should have done from the beginning (although you are still stuck to the app store mostly).... they should had figured out what people want to to on an iPAD before releasing it.. maybe a future version will be there for me but not this one...

Sorry I sound so negative on the iPAD but I just can not figure out what to do with it.. I have watched POD CASTS and it neat but nothing I cant already do...
