Memorial 5k

I've DJed/MCed for lots of different kinds of clubs, gatherings, special events, etc.. over the years - but I've got my first 5 K soon. The young (19) man the memorial run is for lost his life just this past April, so it's all pretty fresh/raw. The young man was on high school and college track teams - hence the 5 K.

So.... the mother says she wants a celebration, and for everyone to have fun.

With all of that, any practical experience advice, or generalities about what the DJ does before/during a 5K? (You can NOT be too specific here. Just don't be mean to me)

And/or

Any other suggestions or words of advice or wisdom?

I would work with the organizer, to see if they want to make some opening remarks, or if they have something they would like you to do from a script.

Off the top :

We are all here to not only celebrate the life of (name), but to support this cause, in which we ask for all forms of support, runners, volunteers and of course any monetary support that will be totally directed to (charity, foundation, family??)

Today's gathering is all about all of these things, and we hope that you will enjoy the run like(name) did on so many occasions, and remember to support and love each other not only during this run, but for all the rest of the days of our lives.

Pause. So let's get started, and take care of some housekeeping rules, and recognize supproters andsponsors(read from list).

We will begin in five minutes, so getready and proceed towards the start.

Once they are running, you can hand it over to someone to recognise winners/people as they cross the finish.

And play a fun upbeat lively mix.

The ones I have done they actually had someone speak(mayor of Raleigh) and so they had a separate area where everyone assmbled, and the speakers were introduced. Then they got down to business and ran the race.

Jodi, give them some options. It might be nice to have them all gather and someone speak first, like a keynote address, to thank them for the help, and to announce any prizes, raffles or methods to give monetarily. Then they could turn it over to you.

The 5k was yesterday morning, and went great. Thank you all for your words of wisdom, I am now an experienced 5K DJ/MC and group photo wrangler.

Nice work Jodi, I really had no words of wisdom as the marathons we have done have been fairly easy with us just wrangling for photos , blessings or speeches. But I knew you would figure it out! (I did add the Flintsone cartoon running sound effect and others as they crossed the finish line they seemed to find it funny)
