Elevator Pitch

When asked by people or at a business mixer, what is it that you tell people you do? You know, that 30-60 second spiel that puts you and your business in the most glowing light possible? I'm trying to narrow things down to say without seeming "corny".

Thanks!

I'm an entertainer that plays music. Oh, you're a DJ. No sir, I'm an enterainer that deserves more pay than a button pusher.

"I own a boutique event design company called DJ Couture. Our business plan intentionally limits the number of clients to be taken on for any given day. This allows us to lavish upon the client unparalleled attention and focus on details. The way we look at it, Brides aren't buying their wedding dress at Walmart...so why would then would they consider a DJ company of a similar caliber? The secret to our success is enlisting the client as the "co-architect" of their special day. We embrace the client's vision, but also make available to them our experience of over 25 years in the industry. Together we build an event that's custom designed and one of a kind."

Nope they are getting them at Costco.
A couple of brides I've talked to lately must have bought their dress at the Salvation Army.
As they say, not every client is my client.
I would imagine you guys were kidding, but in all seriousness, if in the area you pull from there's a Mercedes, BMW, or Audi car dealership, then the brides you should be seeking are there, you just have to find a way to reach them. -Z-

From Costco
In keeping with the retailer’s reputation for affordability, the Kirstie Kelly Signature collection of wedding dresses will be on sale at Costco with a 40% reduction off the recommended retail price. A bespoke Kirstie Kelly wedding dress can cost as much as $4,000, however the range on sale at Costco offers brides-to-be the chance to bag a real bargain as these gowns are priced between $699- $1,399.
A number of one-off events have been scheduled to showcase the collection of six wedding dresses which have just been launched in selected US stores of Costco. In order to allow all future brides the perfect opportunity to try out the new range of gowns, Costco stores have installed special changing facilities at their stores across the States as part of their pilot scheme.
Unlike the other goods available at the Costco stores, the dresses don’t have to be bought in bulk, plus if you find “The One” you can take your dress home that very same day. Costco have also gone to great lengths to accommodate brides of all shapes and sizes as the six designer gowns are available in US size 2 – 24.

Perhaps another way to look at this is as follows:

We complain about how much brides spend on other stuff. IF they economize on their dresses, and flowers, and venues, Then logic dictates that there is more money for excellent entertainment.

What do you have so far? It's a good idea to make it more exciting than "I'm a wedding DJ". Maybe your first line should be designed to get the listener's interest so they'll ask you more questions about your service. "I get paid to party and make people happy" - "Wow, how do you do that?"

Now I'll have to work on mine. I read somewhere that you should have 3 versions of different lengths.

You know Bill, at first I was going to just laugh at your reconsideration and write it off to wishful thinking...but much of the leading data on consumer behavior supports your theory. People have been refraining from debit & credit card use like never before. Persoanl savings week-to-week is up as is paying debt down...again in numbers never before seen. Saving money and living below one's means is the new keeping up with the glutony of the Joneses. You may be onto to something. -Z-

Having a cogent, well thought out elevator speech is an essential part of good business. It makes you look experienced & competent.

I would say:

605DJ is a multimedia company that handles event entertainment and all forms of media production. We help you tell everyone else what it is that you do.

and we do it within your budget.....
How do you know that you do it within anyone's budget?
Wouldn't it be far better to say "Let's explore your budget to see how we can best realize your vision and surpass your expectations"?

Bill,

Yes it is. It is an action item on the marketing segment of my business plan. You can joke but if more members here actually had written business plans, their businesses would not have so much drama.

I also have the phone speech, email replies to various types of questions they too are written down in my plan. I use them , review them & update them as needed.

BINGO we have a winner.
That's exactly what an elevator pitch should do!
