Hi!

I have an Elementary school dance tonight, and they asked me last night If I could do a few games.. It's only two hours long, so Between the Participation dances, the disco (The theme) and other stuff, I don't imagine there will be too much time for games, but just in case, does anyone know of some easy fun games that can involve a bunch of rugrats? I usually don't do games at dances, so i'm trying to figure out what would work.

Thanks!

Steve,

I have one tonight as well. I bring a few hula hoops. I make two or more circles (depending on the amount of kids) and race the hula hoop around the circle. The kids must be holding hands at all times stepping through the hoop passing it around the circle. If they do it quickly I tell them it has to go back around the other way. If the kids are real good at it I bring small hula hoops and use those.

Mostly I do the typical dances and I've been teaching them the Cupid Shuffle. The standards work well: Cotton Eye Joe, Cha Cha Slide, Hokey Pokey, Chicken Dance etc.

Freeze Dance

Put X number of hula hoops on the ground spaced out and get one team captain for each hoop. Then tell them that the winning team will be the one who gets the most people inside their hoop before the song is over. (or they could just be touching the hoop or whatever)

If it's outside, a water balloon toss? messy

Here are a couple we do at dances. For Elementary, the first contest is probably the best one.

Huggy Bear.

Unlimited number of contestants can play. make sure once you start, no one sneaks in the game. Tell any prospective players to get on the dancefloor.

You call out a number (ex. 15) and the kids have to get into groups of that number and huddle like a football team. They have 15 seconds to do it.

When time is up, tell everyone to freeze and count the groups and eliminate everyone in the groups that has less or more than the requested number.

For large groups start with high number, no more than 20 and work your way down alternating even and odd numbers until you get to "2"

The 'UHH" Game

Get 3 contestants.

explain to them that they have to talk about a topic for 30 seconds without saying "uhh, umm" or pausing for more than 2 seconds

use the jeopardy theme (30 seconds long) and ask them to talk about....

Favorite TV show

what you did this summer

Why you like this school, etc.

If they say "uhh" and they usually do, goto the next contestant. The winner is the one who goes the longest.

Tongue twister

3 contestants

Tell them they have to say the words you give them as many times as they can in 10 seconds.

Words are:

Purple pickle

Toy boat

sunshine city

Person who say the most words correctly is the winner

You tell them to do it fast, but in reality, the slower the better.

Next time try the HOT POTATO. I do many kids events each year and that is the one that always ask I do again.

I like "The Dart Game"

It's fun fast and funny and can be done with most ages. The problem at a Elementary school dance, is it might be a 1 - 6th grade or even a 1 - 8th... so you have have real young kids and real old kids.

The Dart Game is great because any age can play, but like most games the older kids will have an advantage.

I start out by asking who wants to play "The Dart Game" and get them all in the middle, have the kids who do not want to play, get against the wall out of the center.

If for some reason, everyone wants to play, have them form a line and then just split it down the middle and make one group get against one wall and the other group against the other wall.

It doesn't have to be perfectly even, or paired up like Coke and Pepsi (which could work also)....

Once you get them lined up you tell them that this is a fast game, and reflexes are what is most important.

You tell them this is kinda like dodge ball.... then you hand each kid a dart. I bought mine at a Sports store where they had a sale on dart boards... You tell them that when they get hit, they are out...

Count 1, 2, 3 GO!!!,,, make sure that you are out of the way,,,, and bring some band aids,,, you'll need them. :)

SURVIVOR GAME

Tape up the numbers 1 - 6 on large paper or cardboard on the walls at various locations in the gym or area.
Explain to the kids they must dance till the music stops. When it stops they must casually run to a number. You roll a dice(I have a large blow up one). Whomever is on that number must leave. Do this till only one is standing

I'll share one of my favorite games. It's like "Hot Potato" and the "Balloon pass" game. You buy 6 foot "Pool Noodles" (those long skinny foam things you see at pools) cut them in 3 foot lengths. They don't pop like balloons and fit in a Rubbermaid tote. They have to pass them around but can not use their hands. Elbows, knees, chins...whatever. They can only pick them up if they drop them but they must be passed as mentioned. Just like hot Potato. They love it.

Slight variation...Have them read passages from Dr. Seuss' "Fox In Socks"...the most impossible collection of tongue twisters ever! I've done this with adults end it's even funnier!
