So I replied and he replied back stating that he is currently out of the country and wants to send me a certified check (here we go again!)

I've received scams like this before, but they were always for out-of-the- country gigs - - this one is local.

ONE CAVIAT - I did a reverse address check and his name is NOT the one that comes up!

What do you think?

Gee, I think it's legit ... NOT!!

A simple search will find a plethora of these types of email frauds; in fact, I can spot several tell-tale signs of a scam in the making in your example. Just delete it and move on.

Rich,

I got the exact same email for the exact same date. The difference is that it was in Abbotsford, WI.

I dismissed it as a scam since it arrived at my personal email address and not my business address. All of my leads and contact information should point to info @ my domain.

These scammers are getting our information from WeDJ.Com. They are all trying to separate us from our hard earned money. They are playing off of our emotions by causing us to think they really are deaf and want sympathy. I've gotten another one for ConOil this week. Beware of that one. And another one from a dying father in the UK who is seeking donations to help his family when he's gone. And one from a mother with cancer in Austria. Should I go on? And the endless Nigerian letters. I did respond and told them to stick their Nigerian where the sun doesn't shine. That was the only one I've ever responded to. The rest I simply clipck the Spam button on my email. I don't waste my time responding to their scam!!

My Response

I received several e-mails of this type as well. Frustrated, I finally replied with the following:

"Good day sir. You have contacted my son about providing music for your son's birthday. I SAID, YOU HAVE CONTACTED MY SON ABOUT PROVIDING MUSIC FOR YOUR SON'S BIRTHDAY! Well, as it turns out, my son is blind and requires that all correspondence be encrypted in Braille. Please resubmit your request in Braille and my blind son will contact you regarding your son's party. I SAID, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR REQUEST IN BRAILLE! For and additional fee, my son will bring along his wife who happens to be a sign language interpreter. This will allow you to understand the lyrics of the music. We also ask that you furnish a bowl of fresh water for my son's guide dog. Per the American Disabilities Act, his guide dog is required by law to accompany him to all his events. Thanks for your understanding and my son looks forward to making your son's birthday memorable. I SAID, THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING!

Yours Truly,

DJGreyhound's Father"

Needless to say, I'm still waiting on their response.

Don't touch it with a ten foot pole! It's a scam.

Any e-mails I get like this are immediately tossed in the trash. I have no problem turning down this stuff that is unsure at best, for the next gig to come along that I know is legit.

Better to be safe than sorry Rich!

Scam

They contract with you and send you a phony cashiers check or money order for over the amount of the contract. They then said they made a mistake and asks you to send them the balance back in a money order or cash and then keep your money. Something like this it I recall correctly.

Greyhound, thanks for the 20 min - pants wetting laugh that you gave me. I am still in tears. Love the response. Hopefully the spammer on the other side will like the laugh too! It's nice to see someone on this board with a sense of humor.

I responded to Mr. Mart's inquiry with a different price for Friday than Saturday (since he said the party would be either-or)

Here's Mr. Mart's reply:
