When I first started "spinning," I was just a youngster moonlighting at a club-style disco in Virginia Beach, VA. This was circa 1976-1978. The place was ran by a friend of mine, and I was working as the door man. The owner was also the DJ, and whenever he had some business to take care of, I would fill in and spin records. I know that disco got a bad rap, but it was fun, and people were once again co-mingling with each other. I absolutely loved this music, and I still do. Much of it has stood the test of time. Of course, back then we didn't really pay much attention to beat matching. People would show up dressed to the tee, and the dancing was kind of a mix of ballroom and freestyle. The Hustle was the dance everyone tried to master. The music was a mixture of funk and orchestra. Some of it was more funk (Average White Band, EWF, Commodores, etc.) while some was more orchestral (TSOP, The Trammps, Donna Summer, etc.).

A while ago, we had a thread where we came up with a pretty good playlist of newer music, with a lot of people giving their input. It sort of took on a life of it's own, and it was fun watching it grow. I thought it would be fun to come up with a similar list of disco/classic funk music of the 70's and early 80's. I love doing a set or two of these types of songs. The trick to beat matching a lot of these songs is the intros and outros they have can be not conducive to beat matching. I will tell you that I use club versions or use some special effects for mixing, but the concept is still the same. I especially like using songs that are familiar, but not overplayed. Of course, adjustment of tempo may be necessary. Try this for a playlist:

"You Should Be Dancing" by Bee Gees (82)
"Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye (95)
"I Just Want To Be Your Everything" by Andy Gibb (97)
"Dancing Queen" by Abba (100)

"Kiss You All Over" by Exile (103)
