12/31 Wedding. Look what a $500 DJ can do! ;)

So I'm no Johnny D (just looked at his 12/31 setup) but here's mine from New Year's Eve. I was in Ashtabula Ohio, a small city on the NE side of the state. It's actually where I grew up, and the wedding was for someone I went to school with. Otherwise there's no way in hell I would have driven 3 hours with all this gear for anyone else. But I got to crash at my parents--which is good because I didn't finish tearing down until 3:30 in the morning. The venue itself is OK, but nothing to write home about. But then again, for that po-dunk town it's awesome.

Anyway, in the pics the gobo is not mine. I tried to talk him into letting me use mine, but his sister works for a DJ company in Cleveland and he used theirs. I think it looks out-of-focus, but hey, it is what it is. They wanted the uplights to independently cycle through the pre-programmed color scheme, which was cool with me. I had to use my smaller rear projection screen due to the limitations of the ceiling. I also went with big sound (for me, anyway) because there were going to be lots of people I knew there. Hell, I knew most of the bridal party. So I had to impress them, you know. And the groom's side was Puerto-Rican. Puerto-Rican's like bass. Is that racist?

Sorry about the crappy pic quality. I'm obviously not a photographer. And before you nit-pickers say anything, I caught the loose wire on the light pole and taped it down after I took these pics. ;)

It was a Source 4 Leko, I think. I didn't ask him about it, because it's his sister that works there. I figured if he didn't like it, he'd say something to her. I don't touch or get involved with other people's equipment, as a rule of thumb.

Ashtabula is almost in my neck of the woods! I am about an hour away from there. Looks great to me!

Byron,

It looks great! Please tell me you charged for all the extra work and equipment you added.

Not for this setup. My bill was $475. Normally, yes. I get $100-$150 for the screen and $25 a pop for the lights. Plus I gave him 6.5 hours for the price of 5. I don't often give favors or discounts, but like I said this was someone I've known since I was a kid and there were a ton of guests that I went to school with, including one that was in MY bridal party at my wedding. All of these guys know what I do, none have seen it in person. So needless to say I felt I had to give them a little something extra. Plus both the bride and groom are laid off cops.

Like I said, there is no way in hell I'd let that setup go for less than a grand any other time. But, sometimes you gotta help friends!

To be honest, I'd say over 1/3 of my 88 weddings on the books next year have significant upsells, from photo booths to uplighting, so really that $500 price jumps to over a grand many, many times. ;)

Right. So you should post a setup that you actually charged more than $500 for?

No one's hating on your setup... hell, you could be the worst DJ in the world and all that is worth more than $500. I feel sorry that you value your time and skill at such a low level. Hopefully Vegas shows you otherwise... or at least more stuff you can sell all for $475.

There's one!!

Here's what I value--the ability to do this full time and make a damn good living doing it, which is precisely what I'm doing.

Vegas will not change my price point, by the way.

I hear that from the bottomfeeders everytime...

Why go to Vegas then? Why improve your craft? Why get more equipment? If you're as busy as you say you are, and have no plans of charging what I charged when I was 14, what did you get out of getting hooked up with a ticket that could have gone to a DJ the NEEDED it??

Anytime I discount a show i count it up as advertising costs.
The show looks great! And for the folks that say anything negative aren't realizing a few things...they're your friends, and you gave them a great price and show. It will come back... Great job.. and on another note...you have great pics to use to sell another job...

I think half of the fun of me being there is to get to meet people like you in person. I told Bob Dietrich this and I think you're deserving of the same--a big bear hug and sloppy European kisses. Maybe we'll do it as a group!!

Arnoldo, in getting to know Byron as I have I can assure you that the value in which he holds his skill (and wares) and what he chooses to charge are 2 completely different things. A 20 something male who chooses to teach kids in, of all places, Bahrain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahrain) generally has to have stones the size of King Kong and the heart of a saint. Before people judge Byron solely based on what he charges they should try and take a closer look at him beyond their own values. I have mad respect for him and that the fact he doesn't need his professional self-esteem validated by what he can get others to pay. -Z-
