OT: The DVD industry has pissed me off

One of the great things I have loved about DVD's and now even more with Blu-Rays is the extras. All the deleted scenes, making of, and other great stuff. Several months ago I noticed that all the DVDs I was renting would not let you watch the extras. It shows you they are there, but when you try to watch them you get a message like: This DVD is intended for rental use, if you want to watch the extra go buy it. I'm sure this is not the choice of the rental companies since it I wanted to buy it I would not pay to rent it first, so this practice could actually hurt the rental outlets. Has anyone else seen this, I get most of my rentals from Redbox.

I've noticed it with newer releases. The DVD market has been in the dump for a few years. They're simply trying to boost sales. So they press alternate rental DVDs which just have the movie. That does not bother me as much as not being able to bypass all the bullsheet previews. Every disc is different. Some you can press top menu, some menu, some you can advance the track, and some you simply have to press fast forward. Back in 1998 rental DVDs had ZERO previews! Now you have 10 to 20 minutes of bull. Commercials, anti piracy warnings, previews, menu animation....just get to the movie!

Yeah I do hate that too, I usually put the DVD in and let it run through all the previews before I even switch the source to see the DVD player.

I attached one of my favorite images regarding DVDs that came out a few years ago. It is soooo true.

It's annoying to have to sit through all the previews even if it is the second time watching a movie. My daughter is on a movie of the month buying spree. I bought her like 21 movies at Christmas but she just likes to collect them. Very funny @dobby10

Pirating movies isn't the answer. Rental movies should be just the movie IMO. I don't need all the bonus features. However you also have to consider the agreement with Netflix. Part of their low priced deal might be the exclusion of the bonus features? I had them on a movie I rented from Blockbuster.

BTW, DVD's are toast. I now rent movies exclusively through my DVD player with Vudu, Blockbuster, Netflix & others. I get just the movie. No previews, no bonus stuff, just the movie. I can also by the movie digitally. If I really LOVE the movie & can buy the DVD with the extra stuff for now. I predict by the end of the decade that all movies will me digitally delivered. You will have an option for also renting or buying the bonus features.

    Your predictions usually happen.

If you don't think you can or don't want to do something, you are right. If you think you can and want to do something, you are also right.

if i can get full 1080p and 3D 1080p with uninterrupted streaming and full dts surround, i'm sold. for now, i'll continue with discs for movies where i want the fullest experience possible. for minor things like tv series or where i don't feel the need for full immersion, i'll take streaming. quick and convenient.

    Skinny Guy,

I can get all of that except 3d right now & I do regularly & that I think is more of a demand issue than a technology issue. When sufficient consumers demand it then it will be there. Discs are dead.

I use my laptop often for such things. While I can "do" Blu-Ray through it, my TV can't handle it...(it's an older model...).

There ARE "hacks" out there. And they work...IF it's just "blocked". If the data is actually not pressed, you're outta luck.
